The open-air Forest Opera (Opera Lesna) in the coastal city of Sopot will undergo extensive renovation and modernization.
The work will start in February and finish by the end of 2010. According to estimates, the modernization, done by Alstal, will cost 74 million zloty (18.4 million euro) and will be partly coved from the EU funds (7 million euro).
After the modernization the Sopot amphitheatre will enlarge its capacity from 4,400 to 6,000 seats. Wooden benches will be replaced with comfortable plastic seats, and the whole amphitheatre will be adjusted to the needs of the handicapped. The stage and dressing rooms will also be renovated. The roof over the stage will resemble a curved leaf.
The Sopot Forest Opera was built in 1909. It is used for various entertainment events and shows, including opera performances and song festivals. Since 1964, the amphitheatre hosts the Sopot International Song Festival, which used to be the most prestigious music event in the Eastern Europe. (mg)
