Strong earth tremors felt in central Poland

22.01.2010

Earth tremors were felt this morning in the area around Belchatow, near Lodz, central Poland.

Preliminary findings by seismologists say strength of the tremors, which occurred at 05.00 CET, was more than 4.5 degree on the Richter scale. There have been no reports of any damage, however.

The KWB Belchatow colliery is situated to the south and west of the area. Jacek Trojanowski from the Institute of Geophysics at the Polish Academy of Sciences told TVN24. “This is a mining district and is familiar with earth tremors. But one this strong is fairly rare.”

In his opinion the shock was caused by nearby mines, "apparently was connected with the open cast mine in Belchatow”. (pg)
