The government security centre has informed that the frost has caused the deaths of another 10 people. More than 200 have died since November, some of them in their own homes.
The Centre is appealing for special awareness to people who might be in need because of the low temperatures. Police and municipal guards have been put on alert.
Appeals are also being broadcast on behalf of wild birds and homeless or feral animals. On several occasions city patrols have had to free swans trapped in ice on lakes and rivers. Birds are also suffering because the cold has frightened off many of their usual feeders. Bird specialists urge people either to persevere – or not to feed at all, as birds come to depend on humans for subsistence.
Also people are being asked to be more aware of cats and dogs living outside. Shelters say they will take in all reported animals and are appealing for donations of old blankets as well as pet food. (ek)
