Poland’s hospitals not safe

01.02.2010

Many hospitals in Poland are not protected against fire and are not adapted to the needs of the disabled says a damning report by the Supreme Auditing Chamber (NIK) shows.

NIK  - which oversees all property owned by the state - monitored 48 public hospitals in Poland and established that they did not meet safety standards. As many as 83 percent lacked fire hydrants, fire extinguishers and fire alarm systems. In half of the hospitals fire escape routes were too narrow or blocked, which would make it impossible for the fire brigade to access a building in case of fire.

Half of the hospitals checked by NIK were not adjusted to the needs of the disabled, lacking easy access entry points, sufficient lifts and other amenities. (mg)
