Jurek guns for presidency

13.02.2010

Right-wing politician Marek Jurek has announced that he will run in the Polish presidential elections this year.

Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw, Saturday, Jurek, who is head of the Right of the Republic party said that “one cannot neglect such a responsibility.”

“Polish politics needs to go back to principles, convictions and responsibility,” Jurek said.

Marek Jurek underlined that his ambition is to get through to the second round of voting in the presidential elections, saying that his campaign will only be successful when he manages to persuade voters, especially from the younger generations, to engage in public affairs.

The conservative politician announced that he is against the entry of Poland into the European single currency, stating that if he became president “the Polish national currency would remain in safe hands.”

Marek Jurek was a member of parliament for the party headed by Jaroslaw Kaczynski between 2005 and 2007, when he quit Law and Justice after a failure to amend the Polish constitution on prenatal life.

After his resignation, he created the Right of the Republic, a Christian-conservative party which currently does not hold any seats in the Sejm, Poland’s lower chamber of representatives. Most of the party’s members were once affiliated with the current opposition conservative Law and Justice party.

So far four politicians have announced their ambitions to start in this year’s presidential race. They are leftist politicians Jerzy Szmajdzinski and Tomasz Nalecz, as well as former Civic Platform member Andrzej Olechowski. Kornel Morawiecki, a former radical anti-communist, has also announced his contendership. (jb)
