Shorter holidays, new school breaks?

17.02.2010

A plan of changes to the school calendar has been proposed by headmasters from the southwestern Lower Silesia region of Poland.

The main novelty would be a two week school break in May, when school leaving exams are under way.

Teachers and pupils alike admit that at that time of the year classes are practically not held. This will be even more true now, because as of this year school leavers have to sit for three written and up to six oral exams.

The week-long Easter break would be shortened, according to the proposed changes presented to the education ministry by Ewa Wolak, an MP from the ruling Civic Platform.

The winter break would last one week and not two weeks as it does now, but pupils would gain a new, one week autumn recess.

The school year would begin traditionally on 1 September, but shortly after its inauguration, the autumn break would begin on 29 October. The school year would end on 30 June.

The education ministry has not presented its opinion on the proposed changes yet. (kk/jb)
