Stefan M, half-brother of prominent journalist Adam Michnik, has said he does not fear being extradited to Poland from Sweden on charges of Stalinist crimes in the 1950s.
"I am a citizen of Sweden, and Sweden defends its citizens,” the 80 year old said at the weekend, who is accused of signing opposition activists’ death warrants in the early 1950s.
“I did not sign any documents. I was just a second lieutenant,” said Stefan M, who left Poland in 1968, eventually settling in Sweden where he worked as a librarian.
Last Thursday a military court in Warsaw approved the request for a warrant for Stefan M’s arrest. Head of the Institute of National Remembrance’s investigative division, Prof. Piotr Dabrowski has stated that after the court decision becomes final, the prosecutor may apply for a European Arrest Warrant.
