Mazowiecki - 1989Former prime minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki has expressed support for Bronisław Komorowski in his race to become presidential candidate for the Civic Platform party.
Tadeusz Mazowiecki, one of the Solidarity leaders and the first non-communist PM, said that Bronislaw Komorowski, speaker of the parliament, suits his vision of a president – a man who is both respectable and amicable.
“Poles need a president who will unite and integrate and Komorowski is able to do that. People should appreciate his straightforwardness,” said Mazowiecki.
Komorowski is rapidly becoming the establishment candidate for presidential candidate of the ruling Civic Platform, receiving support from Lech Walesa and former foreign minister Wladyslaw Bartoszewski.
Mazowiecki criticized Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Komorowski’s rival in the primary election, for saying: “If Komorowski (right) wins, we’ll have a solid national presidency, if I win, we’ll have an exportable presidency,” referring to Sikorski being well-known in the UK and US.
Mazowiecki also slammed Sikorski’s speech at a rally last weekend in which he called the incumbent President Lech Kaczynski, “the former President Lech Kaczynski” adding that “a president can be small, but not small-minded”, referring to Kaczynski’s diminutive height. “It’s not the right thing to say,” said Mazowiecki and added that Sikorski is young and still has time to become a president.
Bronislaw Komorowski emerged as the top choice, along with Radek Sikorski, to represent Civic Platform in autumn elections after Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he would not be standing. According to polls, Komorowski would gain a significant support from Poles in the first round of voting. Komorowski is also popular among politicians. (mg/pg)
