The opposition Law and Justice party wants President Lech Kaczynski to be given the title of honorary citizen of the historical city of Krakow – the city’s leftwing mayor is thought to be in support of the idea.
“The president of Krakow Jacek Majchrowski and the Law and Justice party are trying to strike a political deal,” claims Civic Platform MPs from the southern city, complaining that if a left-wing president of Krakow supports the right-wing Law and Justice’s motion to honor Kaczynski, Majchrowski will be able to finish term in office without being disturbed by the opposition party.
Law and Justice MPs deny the allegations. “ President Lech Kaczynski deserves to be given the title of honorary citizen of the historical city of Krakow because he devoted a large sum of money on the renovation of Krakow’s monuments,” says Law and Justice MP Jozef Pilch.
As further proof of what Civic Platform believes is a growing cooperation between the conservative Law and Justice and post-communist leftwing politicians, President Kaczynski appointed Jacek Majchrowski to the National Development Council, an advisory body to the president. (mg)
