As many as 10 percent of Poland’s armed forces are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Despite the findings by medics, however, the armed forced have not yet adopted a PTSD prevention and treatment programme. Standard procedures, similar to those in the US Army, will be introduced soon.
All Polish soldiers, before going on a military mission and after coming back, will have to fill in a form on their personal problems and will receive professional medical help if necessary.
The forms will be analyzed by psychologists and psychiatrists, who will decide whether a soldier is capable of serving on a military mission.
The Polish army will also create a veterans data base in order to follow the fate of soldiers who retire and to provide them with counseling or medical help in case they suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. (mg)
