The Solidarity trade union has said it will be support Jaroslaw Kaczynski in the June 20 presidential election.
“We support the idea of a solidarity state promoted by Jaroslaw Kaczynski,” said Solidarity leader Janusz Sniadek, who added he will personally collect some of the 100,000 signatures that the Law and Justice leader needs to gain before May 6 to be able to stand in the lection.
The decision was taken on Thursday by the trade union’s national committee.
A poll conducted among Solidarity trade union members before the presidential plane crash near Smolensk on April 10 showed that over 70 percent of Solidarity wanted to vote for a Law and Justice party candidate, which it was presumed, then, to be incumbent, Lech Kaczynski.
“I’m absolutely sure that the union’s members will vote for Jaroslaw Kaczynski anyway. He’s the best candidate for the post, who guarantees stable and reliable rule. His views match the union’s goals,” said Krzysztof Dosla, leader of the Gdansk branch of Solidarity.
The choice of Jaroslaw Kaczynski as the union’s candidate for president has displeased some of the union’s members, however, who are against Solidarity returning to a high profile political stance.
Seventeen candidates have been accepted by the National Election Committee to stand in the lection, including acting president Bronislaw Komorowski, leader of the Democratic Left Alliance Grzegorz Napieralski and deputy prime minister Waldemar Pawlak (PSL). (mg/pg)
