Kids encouraged to rat on each other

06.05.2010

Policemen from the central town of Piotrkow Trybunalski, together with the town authorities, have launched the “I see, I react 2010”programme, encouraging kids to snitch.

The aim of the programme is to help children who are bullied and beaten by their peers, juvenile crime victims and witnesses of offences who are afraid to talk. Policemen and town councilors decided that the best way for young people to share secret information and express their feelings is to write denouncing letters.

Policemen want to break the stereotype according to which a person who rats on their colleagues is a “sneak” or a “snitch” and find students who will inform police about violence and drug dealing at school, at home or yard.

The Crime Prevention Unit from Piotrkow Trybunalski received 21,400 zloty (5,250 euro) from the Interior Ministry for the purpose and wants to reach all 12,000 students who learn in Piotrkow’s schools. (mg)
