13.05.2010

Three universities in Warsaw  top the annual ranking of Poland’s higher education establishments.

The University of Warsaw has become the best university in Poland, leaving behind Jagiellonian University in Krakow, the long-time winner of the Rzeczpospolita newspaper’s ranking. The University of Warsaw proved to have the best Law and Administration, Biology and Natural Sciences and Maths and Exact Sciences faculties.

It is the most desirable university among secondary school graduates and hosts the biggest amount of foreign students. The third best university turned out to be Adam Mickiewicz University in the western city of Poznan. “A university is not a typical enterprise but it should be managed as one,” says Prof. Jacek Gulinski, vice-rector of the university.

The best technical university, according to the ranking, is Warsaw University of Technology, a long-time leader in this category. It is followed by Wroclaw University of Technology in western Poland and AGH University of Science and Technology in the southern city of Katowice.

The ranking shows that in the field of economy Warsaw is also unbeatable. The best economic university is Warsaw School of Economics, which has the best academic staff and whose graduates are highly valued by employers. Next follow Poznan University of Economics and Kozminski University, which is also the best private university in Poland.

The ranking, prepared by scientists, journalists, businessmen and public officials, was based on five criteria: prestige, academic staff, conditions of studying and number of international students,  professors and publications, innovation and research. (mg)
