Bronislaw Komorowski is still a leader in the race to the presidential seat but his lead over Jaroslaw Kaczynski is shortening.

The latest opinion poll staged by the Homo Homini Institue for Polish Radio, shows that if the presidential elections were held on May 16th Komorowski would have the support of 42.2 percent of voters while Jaroslaw Kaczynski 35.9 percent.

Other candidates are far behind with an over 30 percent difference. Leader of the democratic Left Alliance Grzegorz Napieralski boasts a 4.7 percent support, deputy premier and candidate of the Polish Peasant Party Waldemar Pawlak 5.7 percent , while independent Andrzej Olechowski 2.3 percent.

Six percent of those polled have not yet decided for whom to vote, while 65.5 percent declared their readiness to go to the polls.

Marcin Duma from Homo Homini underlines that the battle for the presidential post between the two candidates would settle in the second round and points that the declared turnout is higher than the real attendance, but says the interest in the elections is high.

‘We can expect a bigger turnout than in previous elections. Poles are now affected emotionally and are ruled by a specific responsibility towards the state. However, it remains to be seen whether these emotions will remain following the presidential campaign and the summer term of the elections'.

The first round of the elections is scheduled for June 20th , the second round falls on July 4th. (ab)
