The Festival New Jewish Music reopened in Warsaw today. The event which started on April 9th was called off due to national mourning after the Smolensk air crash on April 10th in which died the presidential couple and top political officials.
The programme of the New Jewish Music Festival encompasses synagogue and kletzmer music, as well as modern, avant-garde works inspired by Jewish music and culture.
Today’s opening concert at the Warsaw Synagogue is a combination of two projects: Mizrachi by Raphael Roginski which is devoted to the traditions of the Diaspora living on the area from Turkey to India. The second project Falash Mura is a presentation of musical traditions of African Jews, from Ethiopia through Sudan and Senegal.
Another very important event during the festival is the Tuesday concert ‘Tribute to Marek Edelman’ commemorating the leader of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, who died October last year. (ab)
