Parliamentary Speaker and acting head of state Bronislaw Komorowski has cancelled all ceremonies at the presidential palace.
The flag on the presidential palace in Warsaw is to fly at half-mast until a new president is elected, and an unofficial state of mourning continues in the presidential administration, Jacek Michalowski, acting head of the Presidential Chancellery said in an interview with the Metro daily.
Michalowski also told the paper that if any member of the presidential chancellery were to engage in any campaign of the upcoming elections, they should leave the administration or at least take holiday for the duration of the campaigns.
“My obligation is to run the chancellery away from the tensions surrounding the presidential campaigns, and so that noone gets sucked into any campaign activity,” Michalowski said.
The presidential elections are to be held on 20 June, with a second round due two weeks after that date if there is no clear winner. The election were brought forward as a result of the Smolensk tragedy of 10 April, in which president Lech Kaczynski and 95 others died. (jb)
