Flood alerts continue

18.05.2010

The Śląsk, Małopolska and Opole provinces in southern Poland will remain under flood alert tonight. Meteorologists are also expecting rainfall in the northwestern parts of the country.

However, the situation is to improve tomorrow, says head of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management Mieczysław Ostojski. "Rainfall will continue in the central, western and southern parts of the country. Meanwhile, precipitation will cease in the northeast. We are expecting the skies to clear in the east, with storms appearing in some areas."

In the current circumstances, even a temporary lack of rainfall will contribute to the lowering of water levels in rivers. Precipitation will drop by Friday reaching a point where flood alerts will no longer be necessary, claims Ostojski.

Water levels have decreased in several rivers in their southern sections within the last several hours, dropping from 10 to even up to 40 centimeters. (aba)
