Olechowski to withdraw from presidential race?

19.05.2010

The Democratic Party’s candidate for president, Andrzej Olechowski might withdraw from the presidential race.

The reason why the former Finance and Foreign Minister is considering withdrawal is very low support for him. According to opinion polls, only three percent of Poles would vote for Olechowski, while he was expecting at least a dozen percent.

Another reason, given by Olechowski’s electoral staff, is that Tadeusz Mazowiecki and other politicians from the former the Democratic Union are encouraging Olechowski to support Civic Platform’s candidate Bronislaw Komorowski.

Olechowski cannot count on financial support from the Democratic Party, either. “Piskorski [leader of the Democratic Party] may spend 6 million zloty [1.5 million euro] on Olechowski’s campaign but if Olechowski brings only three percent of votes Piskorski will kill him,” an anonymous informant told Polska The Times.

Piskorski himself does not want to reveal how much the party will devote to Olechowski’s campaign. “There’s no point spending too much on the campaign because it will be very short,” said Piskorski.

Andrzej Olechowski’s electoral staff does not confirm the news about their candidate’s withdrawal from the presidential race but does not exclude such a possibility, either. “We predicted that Civic Platform would put pressure on Olechowski, scaring him over the return of the Fourth Polish Republic [a plan of moral revolution and political change proposed by Law and Justice] under Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s rule,” says Maciej Bialecki from Olechowski’s electoral staff.
