Billboards showing Civil Platform’s candidate for president Bronislaw Komorowski juxtaposed with an aborted, bloody fetus have appeared on the streets of Warsaw, as pro-life campaigners try to make Poland’s abortion termination laws an election issue.

Below the shocking photograph the billboard proclaims: “Komorowski supports abortion compromise. Abortion kills sick babies.”

The campaign has been launched by the anti-abortion PRO Foundation, after the acting president said that he supports the status quo on Poland’s abortion laws, which are actually some of the strictest in Europe and where terminations are illegal except when the woman's life or health is endangered, the pregnancy is a result of a criminal act, or the fetus is seriously malformed.

It is the last stipulation which the billboard campaign aims to highlight.

“The consent to kill sick babies disqualifies any candidate for a public post, especially for the post of president,” Mariusz Dzierzawski from PRO Foundation told TVN 24, adding that the aim of the campaign is to make people aware who they want to vote for and their record on abortion.

Komorowski’s electoral staff are outraged by the campaign and is going to take the case to court.

“Not only is it a ferocious attack on our candidate, but these shocking images should not have been displayed in public places,” says Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska.

The PRO Foundation is not afraid of legal consequences of its actions, however. “Nothing worse than these murdered babies can happen,” says Dzierzawski, saying that if the Law and Justice candidate Jaroslaw Kaczynski also supports the current abortion law, the foundation will launch a protest against him as well.
