New security council discusses flood situation

21.05.2010

The first meeting of the newly appointed National Security Council, convened by acting president Bronislaw Komorowski on Thursday, was devoted to the flood situation in Poland.

The first session of the council – which includes leaders of political parties and ministers - was to be devoted to the air crash in Smolensk on April 10, which killed president Lech Kaczynski and 95 others.

However, the floods which have decimated parts of south and central Poland this week, dominated the meeting.

It was agreed to start procedures towards a special law on hydro-technological installations as well as a ban on housing construction on areas threatened by flood.

Another session of the National Security Council has been scheduled for next week,  this time devoted to the Smolensk disaster.

Acting president Komorowski announced the new composition of the council last week, consisting of the prime minister, Donald Tusk, speakers of both parliamentary houses, the defence minister and leaders of opposition parties in parliament. (ek/pg)
