Another three deaths were confirmed, Friday night, bringing the death toll from the floods which have engulfed parts of southern and central Poland to 12.

After another meeting of the crisis management committee, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that two people have died in Katowice and the Podkarpacie region. Late Friday evening a police spokesman said a third victim's body has been found in the vicinity of Sandomierz.

"Flooding is not over and the risk in many places is increasing, not decreasing," Prime Minister Tusk said, urging against complacency.

In Warsaw water rose to the critical 770 centimetres level., just 30 cm below the height of embankments. For now, rescue workers say the situation is safe, however, but the unusually long wave which is currently moving south to north through the capital could result in sodden dykes breaking over the weekend.  (pg)
