Warsaw and Wroclaw are just two cities in Poland fighting against the flood which has caused turmoil for thousands of people nationwide.
Shortly before noon, Saturday, the culmination wave reached its maximum in the country’s capital with the Vistula standing at 780 cm. One hour later, water levels had already started to fall.
Warsaw mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz has told residents not be comaplacent however, as levels are to remain relatively constant until Tuesday.
In the south-western city of Wroclaw, the River Oder is between 1-1.5 metres below the limit of the flood embankments. Wroclaw mayor Rafal Dutkiewicz told residents that the flood barriers will hold out, with “100 percent certainty.”
The culmination wave along the River Vistula has begun to flood the city of Plock, around 100 km along the river from Warsaw. Some residents there are becing evacuated. (jb)
