Polish Film Festival opens in Gdynia

24.05.2010

Twenty one feature films compete for the Golden Lions at the Polish Film Festival opening today in Gdynia, northern Poland.

Seven of the competition entries are debut films by young directors.

The festival, which usually takes place in the late summer, has been moved forward this year in the hope of attracting the many Hollywood stars, directors and movie moguls already in Europe for the Cannes Film Festival which ended at the weekend.

The event’s artistic director Mirosław Bork told a press conference that a young wave among Polish film directors is likely to make its presence felt for the second successive year.

New offerings by such highly-acclaimed directors as Janusz Majewski, Feliks Falk, Juliusz Machulski, Jan Jakub Kolski and Janusz Kondratiuk are also in the competition.

The festival jury is chaired by the director Andrzej Barański and includes the director Xawery Żuławski, the Icelandic director and scriptwriter Arni Oli Asgeirsson, the actress Alicja Bachleda-Curuś, the scriptwriter Andrzej Bart, the cinematographer Jacek Petrycki and the world-famous make-up artist Waldemar Pokromski who has worked with such directors as Spielberg, Polanski, Wajda and Tykwer.

A jury verdict will be announced on Saturday. The festival has been running annually since 1972. (mk/pg)
