Acting President Bronislaw Komorowski has signed an amendment to the bill on the Institute of National Remembrance, which will determine who will head in the institute in the case of an emergency.
According to the amendment, in case of the death of a head of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), his responsibilities will be assumed by one of his deputies appointed by the Speaker of the Parliament. The deputy president of IPN will perform his duties until a new head is elected.
Introduction of specific regulation on succession at IPN became necessary after the death of the former IPN’s head Janusz Kurtyka in the presidential plane crash near Smolensk on 10 April.
Civic Platform, which drafted the bill on the Institute of National Remembrance, wants the head of the institute to be elected by the simple majority vote in the Sejm after a proposal by the IPN’s Council. The aim of the proposed regulations is to depoliticise the institute. (mg/jb)
