The twin brother of the late president Lech Kaczynski finally told his mother, Tuesday, that her son had died in the April 10 Smolensk air disaster.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s campaign manager in the June 20 presidential elections, Elzbieta Jakubiak, told TVN 24 television last night that close family were present when he broke the news to his mother.
Jadwiga, 83 years old, is severely ill with heart and lung disease and doctors had requested that Jaroslaw keep the news of the death of Lech Kaczynski from her until she was strong enough. For Jaroslaw, finally telling his mother was “a relief”, said Jakubiak.
Asked how she took the news of the death of her son and daughter-in-law, First Lady Maria, Elzbieta Jakubiak said: “I believe that this is a brave woman, a participant of World War II, a soldier. She knows that she had sons who served the state, and today has one son who must continue the work of his twin brother. I think she is able to muster enough strength to surround Jaroslaw Kaczynski with love and support."
In the week after the Smolensk crash - which killed Lech and Maria Kaczynski and 94 others, many the elite of Poland‘s armed forces and political class - Adam Bielan, close friend of the late president, said: “Jadwiga keeps asking where Lech is.” (pg)
