The Silesian Museum in Katowice in the south of Poland is hosting a unique exhibition of screen-prints by Andy Warhol.
The exhibition is a selection of three screen-prints presenting the Chinese communist leader Mao Tse-tung in various colours. The prints, which were created in 1972, are part of Warhol’s silk screens made on the subject of fame and celebrity.
The iconic series began with many portraits of Marilyn Monroe in the early 1960’s, and went on to include other celebrities from the world of film, arts and politics. Among those whom Warhol portrayed were Lenin, Elvis Presley, Elisabeth Taylor.
The works presented in the Silesian Museum in Katowice come from the Van Abbemusuem in the Netherlands and will be on show until the end of August.
Andy Warhol, was born Andrew Warhola, in Pittsburgh in 1928 to parents who had migrated from Miková, northeast Slovakia, not so far from Silesia. (ab/pg)
