Komorowski stretches lead in poll

29.05.2010

There is growing support for Bronislaw Komorowski ahead of the June 20 presidential elections, finds a new poll by the Homo Homini institute for Polish Radio.

If presidential elections were held on Sunday, Komorowski, the Civic Platform candidate, would receive 47.6 percent of the votes while Jaroslaw Kaczynski (Law and Justice) would pick up 32.5 percent. Bronislaw Komorowski has gained 4.3 percent support in the last seven days with Jaroslaw Kaczynski losing 3.7 percent.

Marcin Duma from the Homo Homini pollsters says that the increase in support for Komorowski "is the effect of the presence of the candidates in the media in recent days. It may prove to be a successful strategy for Civic Platform, which has organised campaigning by Bronislaw Komorowski with the support of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. On the other hand, Jaroslaw Kaczynski may have exhausted the formula of his previous campaigns, withdrawing from appearances and being showed in public only rarely.”

In third place in the latest poll was Grzegorz Napieralski on 6.1 percent, followed by Waldemar Pawlak (4.2%), Andrzej Olechowski (1.6%), Marek Jurek (0.7%), Andrzej Lepper ( 0.7%), Janusz Korwin-Mikke (0.6%), Kornel Morawiecki (0.1%) and Boguslaw Ziętek (0.1%).

Turnout would be 63.7 percent if elections were held this weekend.

All opinion pollsters stressed this week, however, that sampling methods have been compromised over the last two weeks, with floods making access to certain areas impossible.(pg)
