The city of Poznan is bracing itself for a culmination wave on river Warta.
Rescue services are working to strenghten embankments in two low-lying districts of the city. The high levels are being caused by water discharge from the reservoir at Jeziorsko. The water level on the Warta is expected to top 650 cms.
In spite of the high water, the situation in Poznań is reported as “stable”, although the local sewage plant is standing by to shut down when the water rises past 640 cms. It is expected that the culmination wave will be passing through Poznań for the next three to four days.
Poznań authorities claim that a thorough review of reinforcements carried out after the great flood of 1997 should guarantee that the city can withstand up to seven metres of water on the Warta. (ek)
