Poland’s Foreign Ministry will help travel agencies to regain foreign tourists who decided not to come to Poland because of the flood which made impassable many areas of the country.

“Don’t believe that the whole Poland is under water,” travel agencies advertise.

Travel companies are concerned that widespread media coverage of Poland under water has put many potential tourists off visiting the country. “International broadcasters show flooded houses and victims but do not mention that only a part of Poland was flooded,” says Jan Korsak, head of Polish Tourism Chamber.

In order to help the Polish travel industry, the foreign ministry is going to issue a bulletin with current news about the progression floods and their aftermath and ask embassies to monitor news coverage from Poland.

The flood is slowly coming to an end in Poland. Water in the Warta River in Poznan, which was in danger of being flooded, is still above emergency level – it reached 6.65 m – but it is now subsiding and will not overflow the embankments.

The highest wave has already passed the main city in the Wielkopolska region. Nevertheless 230 citizens of Poznan and 180 firemen are reinforcing embankments in case they become waterlogged. “We need to be ready for all possible scenarios,” says the mayor of Poznan, Ryszard Grobelny.

The wave is moving down the river. It is expected to hit Gorzow Wielkopolski on 3-4 June and move to Western Pomeranian region, where flood alerts were announced in major towns and cities, including Szczecin. (mg)
