Another flood alert in southern Poland

02.06.2010

After a night of torrential rain the water level in the main Polish rivers - the Vistula and the Bug - has risen dangerously and the south of Poland is again being threatened with flood.

Flood alerts were announced in many localities in the Podkarpacie region, where water reached even 1.5 m, exceeding emergency level. The situation in the main cities, such as Rzeszow and Sanok may worsen as further rains are expected today.

The Malopolska region is also in danger of being flooded, especially in the Bobowa county, which was seriously affected by the flood two week ago – several dozen houses, fields, roads and railway track were under water. In Janowiec the Vistula River broke the embankment.

Torrential rains in the Tatra Mountains caused soil slides, which damaged several houses. “Krepachy village was completely flooded at night and at the moment firemen are pumping out water from the flooded buildings,” says Piotr Krygowski from a fire brigade. Emergency level on the Czarny Dunajec was exceeded by 94 cm.

Floods are also expected in the eastern region of Lubelszczyzna, where the level of water in the Vistula and the Bug has risen significantly overnight. Flood alarm was also announced in the southern region of Silesia. (mg)
