Ombudsman candidate in mixed gay message confusion

08.06.2010

The conservative Law and Justice party candidate for the vacant civil rights Ombudsman position in Poland supports same-sex partnerships, but then compares gays to “prostitutes”.

Though Zofia Romaszewska says she supports civil partnerships between same-sex couples - contrary to Law and Justice‘s stand on the issue - she has her limits: “Everyone has the right to demonstrate but gay and lesbian manifestations are obscene and I oppose placing sex on a pedestal,” the candidate told the private TOK FOM radio station.

Romaszewska also compared gay and lesbians to prostitutes, although later softened her stance. “Maybe the word “prostitute” is a slight exaggeration. But I have the same attitude towards heterosexual couples who explicitly manifest their sexual desire,” said Romaszewska, a former state tribunal judge.

Some say her mixed message on gay issues should eliminate her as candidate for civil rights Ombudsman, a position made vacant after the death of Janusz Kochanowski in the Smolensk air crash.

“In my opinion Romaszewska doesn’t know what she’s talking about,” said Polish Peasant’s Party politician Jan Bury. “First she compares gay people to prostitutes and then supports registered partnerships. Jaroslaw Kaczynski [the Law and Justice leader] should listen to the interview and withdraw the candidate, because she’s just embarrassing.” (pg/mg)
