Poland’s flooded regions have been hit by clouds of mosquitoes, basking in the hot, wet conditions.
A combination of still post- flood water and warm weather, with temperatures today reaching 30 degrees Celsius, has encouraged the insects to thrive.
In Poland’s climate mosquitoes do not transmit infectious diseases, but these days they have become unbearable, especially in the south-eastern Carpathians region.
The city of Tarnobrzeg, which has been affected by the flood twice this year, has launched a costly spraying operation. Jaslo and Rzeszow are following in its foosteps soon.
Calls for an action to beat back the biting insects are coming from all areas which are or were under water. (kk)
