As presidential hopeful Jaroslaw Kaczynski did not declare his political affiliation to the State Electoral Commission, his party, Law and Justice, does not figure on official announcement boards that have sprung up across Poland.
Electoral Commission notice boards usually show short biographies of the candidates, such as their ages, education, function and political affiliation. However, there is no sign of Law and Justice (PiS) etched by Kaczynski’s name.
“It’s symbolic,” says Adam Bielan, spokesman for the party. “Jaroslaw Kaczynski is a candidate for the nation.”
In an interview with the Gazeta Wyborcza daily, Bielan underlined that Kaczynski’s ratings in the polls are higher than those if only PiS supporters were to vote, meaning that people who do not usually vote for the party are willing to support Kaczynski in the presidential ballot.
Only two other candidates do not declare their political affiliation on the electoral announcements: Andrzej Lepper and Kornel Morawiecki, although the latter is de facto politically independent. (jb)
