Floods and hot, humid weather conditions may oppress people but insects in Poland are in a creepy-crawly heaven.
The city of Krakow and surrounding areas are inundated with mosquitoes and other insects. The Malopolska region as a whole is preparing to spend over 2 million zloty (half a million euro) on insect repellents alone. The flood encouraged them at first. And the hot weather - with temperatures of over 30 degrees - is making matters worse.
The floods in Poland have destroyed hectares of arable land and households and caused the death of livestock. Breeders and planters are slowly beginning to count their losses. However, the inundated areas are slowly beginning to feel the first aftermath of the flood.
Mosquitoes and black flies are slowly taking control of the flooded areas. Humidity and high temperature create ideal conditions for breeding success of both insects.
In many of the flooded areas, including certain districts in the capital of Warsaw and Wroclaw in the west special preventive measures had been taken by spraying repellents.
Smaller localities however have not enough financial means to stage such large scale operations.
Experts warn that the massive attack of both insects awaits Poland after the flood wave has passed. In some three weeks Poland will have to battle against a plague of mosquitoes and black flies.
If the weather continues to be humid and hot the battle may be a long one. Experts advise special attention in cases of children and elderly as well as people allergic to insect bites. Females of the black flies and mosquitoes feed on animal blood though they are common nuisance to humans They spread several diseases and are especially dangerous to people with allergies. (ab/pg)
