Polish films among world’s best

12.06.2010

Krzysztof Kieślowski

Four Polish films are included in a list of 100 best non-English language films in the history of world cinema, compiled by the British film magazine Empire.

The Three Colours trilogy by the late Krzysztof Kieślowski is in 14th place and the same director’s Decalogue series in the 36th place.

Empire magazine quotes director Stanley Kubrick as once describing Decalogue as “the only masterpiece made in his lifetime”.

Ashes and diamonds, one of veteran director Andrzej Wajda’s early features, is in the 38th position and Roman Polanski’s debut Knife in the water occupies the 61st place.

The No.1 in the list is Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. (mk)
