Kaczynski – the tabloid’s favourite

15.06.2010

The Law and Justice candidate for president Jaroslaw Kaczynski appears on the covers of Polish tabloids more often than any other candidate, shows a study.

A report by Newton Media, which monitored the main Polish dailies – Gazeta Wyborcza, Rzeczpospolita, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, Polska The Times, Nasz Dziennik – and tabloids Fakt and Super Express – between 7-12 June shows that stories featuring Jaroslaw Kaczynski appear more often than other candidates. His name and picture appeared on the front page of Fakt ten times (his main rival Bronislaw Komorowski’s image was used only five times) and twice on the cover of Super Express (Komorowski only once).

In total the Law and Justice candidate was portrayed in 32 cover stories in Polish dailies while Civic Platform’s Bronislaw Komorowski in 33 front-page articles. Kaczynski’s image also appeared on the covers of other daily newspapers more often than of any other candidate’s.

Grzegorz Napieralski, the Democratic Left Alliance’s candidate, made front-page headlines ten times and Waldemar Pawlak from the Polish Peasants’ Party nine times. An independent Andrzej Olechowski was rarely covered by the Polish press, while other candidates were almost entirely ignored. (mg)
