Civic Platform vies for leftist support

16.06.2010

Civic Platform wants traditional leftist supporters to back Bronislaw Komorowski in the second round of presidential elections.

In an interview with Radio ZET, head of the Civic Platform parliamentary club, Grzegorz Schetyna said that he “wants Grzegorz Napieralski and the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) to back Bronislaw Komorowski in the second round of the presidential elections.”

Mr. Schetyna assured listeners that Civic Platform (PO) is not scared of the second round of elections, billeted for July 4, but would prefer if the first round of elections on June 20 would be sufficient to present a clear winner “so that Poles can go on holiday.”

Even though Komorowski’s ratings are close to 50 percent in the polls, Schetyna hopes that the SLD, with Napieralski at the helm, will back PO.

The statement comes after Tuesday’s announcement by Wlodzimierz Cimosiewicz, a former prime minister from SLD, that he would back Bronislaw Komorowski in the presidential ballot.

In the 2005 presidential elections, it was the leftist votes which helped Lech Kaczynski from Law and Justice win the presidential race against Donald Tusk. (jb)
