Poll - Komorowski close to outright majority

16.06.2010

Bronislaw Komorowski’s hopes of winning outright in the first round of the presidential elections on June 20 got a boost from the latest opinion poll, which puts the Civic Platform candidate on 48 percent support, just two percent from the magic majority needed.

His main rival, the Law and Justice’s candidate Jaroslaw Kaczynski, is on 34 percent support shows the survey by PBS DGA . Both candidates lost support in comparison with the last week – Komorowski is down two percentage points and Kaczynski four percentage points.

The Democratic Left Alliance’s Grzegorz Napieralski comes third in the presidential race, with nine percent of votes. Next follows Janusz Korwin-Mikke who secured 3 percent of votes. Andrzej Olechowski, Waldemar Pawlak and Andrzej Lepper can count on only two percent of votes.

In a second round, scheduled for July 4  - which would be between the top two candidates if nobody wins an outright majority on Sunday - Komorowski would win by 60 to 40 percent in a run-off against Kaczynski.

The poll shows that in the second round Komorowski would take over most of Grzegorz Napieralski’s (SLD) electorate while Kaczynski would gain two thirds of Pawlak’s (PSL) electorate.

The survey was conducted before former SLD prime minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz announced his support for Komorowski on Tuesday.

According to the poll, Bronislaw Komorowski is supported mainly by people with higher education (63 percent) who live in big cities (56 percent), while Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s electorate consists mainly of people with vocational education (45 percent) who live in rural areas(41 percent).
