Many prisoners, who also have the right to vote in an election in Poland, are casting their ballots in jails throughout the country.
In one of Warsaw’s prisons on Rakowiecka street, voting started promptly at 06.00 CET, with a high turnout being recorded.
Ewa Latoszek, head of the electoral committee at the prison, told Polish Radio that the casting of ballots is done in rotation according to prisoner category.
The most dangerous inmates were the first to vote this morning, then patients at the jail infirmary were permitted to vote, followed by other members of the prison’s community serving shorter sentences.
Prisoners told Polish Radio that it is worth voting from behind bars, and that every vote counts. Warsaw’s Rakowiecka prison houses around 1,000 inmates. (jb)
