Friday is the last day of school for 5.7 million schoolchildren and 650,000 teachers across Poland.
Approximately 360,000 first graders will receive their first school certificates, among them almost 15,000 children who started their schooling at the age of six, a novelty in the Polish education system.
Education Minister Katarzyna Hall will participate in the ceremony marking the end of the 2009/2010 school year with students and teachers from a primary school in Swiniary, central Poland. The school building there was thoroughly damaged during the recent floods, which has meant the ceremony will take place place in a neigbouring library.
According to the Ministry of Education, 954 schools and 159 kindergartens were destroyed during the May and June floods. The cost of damages is estimated at almost 60 million zloty (15 million euro) in case of schools, with 8.2 million zloty (2 million euro) reported damages for kindergartens. (mg/jb)
