Europe’s first Pygmy village is to be recreated in Krakow’s market square, complete with domed huts, African drums and “inhabitants” in colorful folk costumes.
Visitors will have an opportunity to enjoy the taste of manioc, a carbohydrate staple, and real honey from Africa.
The event is part of the S.O.S. for Africa campaign, organized by Capuchin friars, who want to raise money to finance the construction of two schools in Chad. The project will cost an estimated 20,000 euro.
Father Benedykt Paczka, who is organizing the festival, says five huts will be built. Their roofs will be covered with banana and palm leaves, courtesy of the local botanical garden. A fitting room will be available for those willing to try on original Pygmy bark clothes painted with beautiful abstract patterns and extraordinary jewelry.
Pygmys are native to many parts of central Africa, including the Mbuti, Bongo and baka tribes. (kk)
