Massive fire rages in Lodz, central Poland

29.06.2010

Four huge warehouses in the central city of Lodz have been gutted by one of the biggest fires in recent history in Poland.

Over 200 firemen from 35 fire brigades are trying to put out fire of in four Wifama warehouses, where foil, paper and other inflammable materials are stored.

Over 7,000 square meters are on fire and a thick black smoke has spread all over Lodz. Inspectorate for Environmental Protection claims that the smoke is not toxic.

The fire broke out at 03.00 CET in the smallest warehouse when a forklift caught fire. After the subsequent explosion of a gas container the fire quickly spread to the neigbouring buildings.

“The fire operation will probably last till the evening because water pressure in hydrants is too low. We have to transport water in tankers,” Artur Michalak from the Lodz fire service told media, who said that one fireman has been injured in the operation. (mg)
