New regulations in effect from July 1 will mean that drivers may have their licences taken away for life if caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
The move comes after the number of caught drunk drivers in Poland amounted to over 180,000 in 2009 alone.
Drivers who cause an accident while driving under the influence are to have their licences revoked permanently, while all drivers caught with more than the permitted amount of alcohol in their system are to be entered onto the criminal register for life.
The new regulations also imply that cyclists caught riding over the allowed alcohol limit (0,2‰) may also have their car licences taken from them.
Marek Kakolewski, spokesman for the Traffic Police, told Polish Radio that if a court revokes a licence for a term longer than three years, then the driver is liable to retake his/her driving test. (jb)
