Heineken Open'er Festival, one of the largest summer music festivals in Europe, is opening today in Gdynia on the Baltic coast, northern Poland.
The four day event, voted Best Major Festival at the European Festival Awards ceremony this year, is being headlined by Pearl Jam, Kasabian and Grace Jones plus 130 acts playing on seven stages.
Other foreign acts include Cypress Hill from the United States, Britain’s Fatboy Slim, Massive Attack and Tricky, as well as the Gorillaz Sound System and The Dead Weather with Jack White.
The organizers have prepared a wide range of accompanying events, including dance workshops and fashion shows. On Sunday, free buses will be provided for those willing to cast their ballots in the presidential elections.
The festival – then called the Open Air Festival – began in 2002 and has been growing in importance on the summer festival circuit ever since. Each year around 100,000 punters turn up to listen to an eclectic mix of rock, indie, electronic music, hip-hop, jazz, experimental, electro house, ambient and much more.
Polish artists appearing this year include Muchy, L Stadt, Cool Kids of Death and Lao Che. (pg/mk)
