Kaczynski to be questioned in Smolensk crash case

09.07.2010

Jaroslaw Kaczynski is to be interrogated in relation to the Tu-154 crash near Smolensk in which his twin brother, Lech died along with his wife and 94 others.

The Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw has planned to question Kaczynski on July 27.

"Some members of the families of the Smolensk crash victims have already testified," Kaczynski's lawyer Rafal Rogalski told the press, adding that "prosecutors ask them if they possess information which can be useful for the investigation into the cause of the catastrophe. They can choose themselves whether to be interrogated or not and when."

The Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw has also complied with Russians’ request to question certain witnesses in relation to the case.

“The Russians sent us a list of people who they want to interrogate. Members of the victims’ families will be asked, for example, why their relatives flew to Smolensk on board of the presidential plane. They will also be informed about the possibility to claim damages,” said Jerzy Artymiak from the Polish Military Prosecutor’s Office.

“It’s too early to talk about damages. First the Prosecutor’s Office needs to establish who is responsible for the crash,” muses Rogalski. (mg)
