Warsaw becomes more tolerant ahead of EuroPride?

13.07.2010

Less than a week ahead of the EuroPride 2010 march taking place in Warsaw, a new survey commissioned by one of Poland's weeklies shows that over 50 percent of people living in Poland's capital are tolerant towards sexual minorities.

The survey shows that more than a half of Warsaw residents would accept a homosexual partner of their child.

“This is very optimism-inspiring data,” says Dr. Joanna Heidtman, a psychologist and sociologist at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

The survey, conducted by ARC Rynek i Opinia, shows that 30-year olds are the most tolerant group, while the youngest and the oldest respondents were more prejudiced.

Dr. Heidtman explains that prejudice tends to be contagious. “Through their behaviour and conversations at home parents pass on their outlooks, including prejudice and stereotypes, on their children,” says the sociologist.

Poles will have an opportunity to demonstrate and verify their attitude towards sexual minorities at the EuroPride 2010 parade, which will be held in Warsaw on Saturday. This is the first time that such an event will take place in Poland and in Eastern Europe. (kk/jb)
