J. Kaczynski blames government for plane crash
Law and Justice leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, wants to hold the government accountable for the tragedy in Smolensk, where 96 people died in a plane crash on 10 April, among them the official’s twin brother, President Lech Kaczynski.
In an interview for the conservative daily Gazeta Polska, Kaczynski said that, as the organizer of the event, the ruling government of Civic Platform was “politically responsible for the catastrophe.”
When informed about the crash by Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, the head of the opposition Law and Justice allegedly replied that the disaster was “a result of [the government’s] ‘criminal’ policy because you did not buy new planes.”
In the interview, Kaczynski also recounts his travel to Smolensk following the crash, pointing to frequent stops and slow driving. The politician alleges that this was done to let Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s delegation pass before the Law and Justice representatives in order to reach the crash site first.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski also added that Chief Military Prosecutor, Krzysztof Parulski, who arrived in Smolensk “played no active role” at the site and was “of no significance” to the Russian counterparts. (aba/mmj)
