Funding set for new Solidarity centre in Gdansk

14.07.2010

Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski and Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz have signed an agreement on financing the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk.

The investment, which is to take up 300 million zloty (78.2 million euro), will receive almost half the amount from EU funds, while the rest will be covered by the city.

The institute is to resemble a ship under construction. It will house a permanent exhibition centred on Poland’s road to freedom, a library, an archive and a venue for meetings and discussion.

“It is to be a site documenting the heritage of the Solidarity trade union and Poland’s road to regaining independence,” said Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz.

Construction of the European Solidarity Centre will commence this autumn, and is to be completed in 2013. (aba/jb)
