Grunwald victory in music

15.07.2010

Four works in tribute to the victory of Polish and Lithuanian forces over the Teutonic Knights 600 years ago are featured on a CD recorded and produced by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Olsztyn.

The tribute album is entitled ‘Grunwald in honorem victorum militum polonorum 1410-2010.’

The symphonic poem Grunwald by Jan Adam Maklakiewicz (1899-1954) was written during World War II. The remaining three pieces are by contemporary composers: Romuald Twardowski (Grunwald 1410 for orchestra and bass voice), Stanisław Moryto (1410, orchestral overture) and Janusz Bogdan Lewandowski (Fanfares of Polish Knighthood).

All the four works will be performed tomorrow at a concert in Ostroda, northern Poland, by the Olsztyn Philharmonic Orchestra.

Fought on 15 July, 1410, the Battle of Grunwald was one of the largest battles in medieval Europe  and  one of the most glorious and significant military victories in Polish history. (mk/mmj)
