Signed constitution nets 27,000 euro for charity

15.07.2010

A copy of the Polish constitution containing the signatures of President-elect Bronislaw Komorowski and his rival in the elections, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has sold for 111,211 zloty (about 27,400 euro).

The auction, which closed on Allegro.pl at 10:15 CET, was a charity fundraising action run by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, one of Poland’s largest and most renowned charities, known for working to aid children with cancer.

Both politicians, Komorowski and Kaczynski, signed the constitution, adding their respective campaign slogans: “Zgoda buduje” (Consensus building) and “Polska jest najwazniejsza” (Poland is most important). Komorowski presented the signed document to the charity organization during one of the pre-election televised debates.

The auction, which started at a base sum of a few cents, garnered 37 bids. A second auction for the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity will end on Monday – Kaczynski offered a photo album of nature pictures signed by the late Lech Kaczynski, Bronislaw Komorowski, Polish People’s Party leader Waldemar Pawlak and Democratic Left Alliance leader Grzegorz Napieralski, and Marta Kaczynska, daughter of the late Presidential couple, donated a crystal-encrusted, tulip-shaped brooch.

Already, the two items have garnered many views on the auction website and the photo album is currently bidding at 4,494 zloty (1,105 euro) and the brooch at 3,550 zloty (873 euro).

The charity auction is a special fundraiser, organized to coincide with the 4 July presidential elections, to aid flood victims. To date, over 900,000 zloty have been donated. (mmj)
